Oh how it builds; the excitement, the frustration and the desire. Waiting for a game can be the worst form of torture and it’s something every gamer goes through. It doesn’t matter how good the game you’re playing is there is always something shiny and new lurking about in the distance, taunting you with its teaser trailers and 1080p screenshot press releases… And it’s made all the worse by over zealous Publishers and Developers announcing stuff way too early and then delaying stuff into the ether.
I really wish they’d stop that.
Well misery loves company! So I decided to make a list of games I’m looking forward to and to say a little bit about each of them. Feel free to share your agony with me in the usual way as detailed below. But first here’s my list:
No Man’s Sky
Can’t Wait!
Can’t Wait!
Regular readers of this blog will not be in the least bit surprised to see that No Man’s Sky is top of my list. It has been for quite a while… well since Hello Games announced it to be honest. I love everything about the ideas and concept of it. A Universe-sized Universe inside a game that you can go and explore…
Here’s a character, here’s a ship, here is a Universe, so off you pop and have some fun. It’s procedurally generated and has the potential to throw out some really crazy combinations to make every single planet feel unique and different. I really can’t wait to jump in and see if it lives up to the potential it has shown.
Firewatch
Beautiful Art Design for this game…
Beautiful Art Design for this game…
Having recently played and reviewed Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and loving every second of it, I’ve realised there are a lot of parallels that can be drawn between it and Firewatch. It’s a First Person narrative focused game where stunning visuals and the character interaction and development are the pivotal elements in the experience that you’ll have.
I love nothing more than a deep interesting story to invest myself in and that’s what I’m expecting to find here. Rapture has only raised my expectations for this game as an experience I hope to enjoy even more.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Just wow! Looks awesome
Just wow! Looks awesome
Horizon is an interesting idea – what happens after our civilisation is gone but some form of humanity survives? What would that culture be like, what would they know or think of us? With all our technology, how would the world be changed if it was left to adapt and survive without us?
These are the sort of questions raised by the reveal of the game at E3 this year while Guerrilla Games showed off just how gorgeous the world they created is and how the game will likely work. I thought Killzone: Shadow Fall, Guerrilla’s last game which was a launch title for PS4, was stunning to look at, buttery smooth and full of good ideas and uses for the new tech and power in the PS4 and Dualshock 4 Controller. So I can’t wait to see them build on that solid base with a new interesting IP, it’s been needed and the studio is full of talent to make a real hit if they get it right. I’m confident they will.
Mass Effect : Andromeda
Can’t wait to see how this unfolds!
Can’t wait to see how this unfolds!
Full disclosure here, I have not played a Mass Effect Game before… I’m sorry, I know I should’ve but I haven’t yet; you got me. But after playing Dragon Age: Inquisition and loving every second of it and knowing that this is also a Bioware designed game, just like DA:I, makes me want to play this one.
Setting it in a different time period from the original trilogy and in a different Galaxy is the perfect set up to move forward without really stepping on any toes or putting off people like me that missed out for one reason or another. It’s a trend we are seeing with a lot of games and series recently with the change in console generation.
As I mentioned above when I was talking about No Man’s Sky I’m a huge Sci-fi fan in games and like I mentioned with Firewatch I love a good narrative story. I’m expecting Bioware to deliver both in this title with its own unique style.
Well those are just 4 of the many games I am looking forward to in the hopefully not too distant future! I’d love to hear your thoughts on my choices or tell me some of your most anticipated titles! You can do that by emailing podcast@outoflives.net with the subject line Plenty of Lives.
