Get Out is the directorial debut of Jordan Peele and it got me wondering what he could bring to the horror genre? Well this film is definitely told from a unique perspective, that is uncommonly seen in genre films.
In the center of the film is a man who is in an interracial relationship and he is told by his girlfriend he is about to meet her family for the first time, although they are unaware of the fact that he’s black and that really makes him feel awkward. When he arrives it all seems ok for a while until he begins to realize that there’s some crazy ass shit going on behind the scenes.
I’m a fan of horror movies, I still say to this day the best horror movie is Alien, but we’ve also had some really bad horror movie of late, like the Saw films and the Paranormal Activity films and many, many more, but last year we got some really good horror movie, don’t breathe was one of my favourite films of 2017.
So, when I saw the trailer for this movie I was hugely enticed, it’s definitely a courageous viewpoint. You don’t commonly see films like this told from this perspective and this film is a breath of fresh air.
Jordan Peele really impressed me, because he understands the seriousness of this subject matter, but also, he’s able to find humour in it and I gotta take my hat off to the man.
What’s very special about this debut is he understands how to direct genre films, how to make a horror scene interesting or fun, particularly the fantastic opening scene, but also that his singular voice can be maintained and come through your stereotypical genre filmmaking, because yes this film has a lot of horror tropes, jump scares, things popping out at you, people walking past hallway corridors, and yet through all of that he maintains its originality because of its story and its unique perspective.
Daniel Kaluuya plays the lead character and I thought he was brilliant in the film, as well as LilRel Howery who plays his best friend and stole the show with his amazing comic relief, across the board the performances were great.
There’s a good sense to the horror as well towards the third act that builds to some satisfying moments.
The only issue I have with the movie is the pacing does suffer, there are a lot of sequences that are just weird, but by the end, you understand it for the most part.
Guys this film is a breath of fresh air, Jordan Peele directing is fantastic, the acting is great, this is just a well-done horror movie that easily gets my recommendation to go watch this in the Cinema.
Well that’s my two sense on the film Get Out, please let me know what you think in the comments below and as always, I am Mr Moody and it’s been my pleasure to service you.
