Ocean’s Eight is directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit and The Hunger Games) and stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina.
The story is in fact a sequel to the original Ocean trilogy that was helmed by Steven Soderbergh, the first being a remake of the 1960s film. This time around it’s about Debbie Ocean, the sister of Danny Ocean formerly played by George Clooney, and a heist that herself and a crew are trying to pull off at the New York City Met Gala.
I’ll state the obvious straight away, this film isn’t anything special. It’s a by the numbers heist film that takes a lot of story elements from the first movie. But I can’t deny the film had me smiling mostly from beginning to end and that’s all thanks to the incredible cast.
The Ocean’s crew where a lot of fun throughout the movie, everyone works well with one another, every scene you could see they were all just having a blast, and I felt the fun and the genuineness come out on screen.
Sandra Bullock as usual is extremely charming, she’s always been fantastic as is Cate Blanchett. I would say the one I was most worried about was Rihanna and even she was good.
It’s a beautiful looking movie, the dresses they wore even when they’re planning the heist, were really amazing. The cinematography is stylish and well done, as is the directing, Gary Ross did good job even if it feels like he’s copying what Steven Soderbergh did in Ocean’s Eleven.
Everything here screams an average movie, from the same premise to even how it’s directed, but the incredible cast and even the familiar feel from the Clooney trilogy makes it a very fun watchable ride.
The Final Verdict
Should you go watch Ocean’s Eight? I have to say yes
Why? Because of its familiarity and Casted, also a nice palate cleanser from all the big blockbusters of late.
